There were once two merchants in a busy town. Both sold goods at the market, but their approaches to life and work were very different.
The first merchant focused solely on his own success. He would arrive at the market early, set up his stall, and work all day. He avoided helping others and believed that business was a competition. “If I help someone else, they’ll just take my customers,” he thought. He would often walk past other merchants struggling to carry their goods, thinking it was none of his concern.
The second merchant, however, had a different mindset. He believed that success was not just about himself, but about the whole community thriving. Each morning, on his way to the market, he would stop to help other merchants carry their goods, offer advice to newcomers, and share his knowledge about where to find the best supplies. He never saw his fellow merchants as competition, but rather as partners in building a strong marketplace.
One day, heavy rains flooded the road leading to the market. The path was muddy, and many merchants struggled to get their carts through. The first merchant, determined to save himself, tried to push his cart through alone, but he kept getting stuck. Frustrated, he yelled at others to get out of his way, but the mud only got worse, and his cart sank deeper.
The second merchant, seeing the same difficult path, decided to stop and organize the other merchants. “If we work together,” he said, “we can clear a path for everyone.” They began to help each other, lifting carts out of the mud, clearing the road, and making it easier for all the merchants to pass through. Together, they made their way to the market successfully.
When the first merchant finally arrived—much later, and exhausted—he noticed that the second merchant’s stall was full of customers, while his own was empty. People had seen the kindness and cooperation of the second merchant and were drawn to do business with someone who cared about others. The first merchant realized that by focusing only on himself, he had isolated himself from the community.
Moral of the story:
In the workplace, just like in life, success is not a solo journey. By helping others, sharing knowledge, and working as a team, we create an environment where everyone can thrive. Those who uplift others build trust, loyalty, and a stronger network, while those who isolate themselves often find success slipping away.
